Family Engagement in Education

Washington Family Engagement defines family engagement in education as the equal and equitable partnership between educators and families built on mutual respect, shared power, and shared responsibility centered on the ultimate goal of students’ healthy socio-emotional development and successful academic progress.

Engaged families are key to their students’ academic success. Over 50 years of national research demonstrates that when schools and families work together as equal partners, student attendance, academic scores, and high-school graduation rates increase, and school dropout rates decrease.

Families know their children better than anyone else, and, like educators, they want the best for their children and want to make a difference in their education. In order to build trusting partnerships, families want to feel welcome at their children’s school. They want to collaborate with educators and to be recognized as equal partners in education. They want their race/ethnicity, culture, language, and diverse perspectives to be acknowledged, included, and respected.

To form strong partnerships, educators, families, and community organizations must develop skills to work together, support student success, understand equity and diversity, and navigate the public school system. They play important roles in the future of the children they share.

Washington Family Engagement offers capacity-building programs and training opportunities for families, educators, and community organizations to learn best practices and develop new skills to support the success of all students.
